Pushing the Limits - Read-A-Long Week 1

This fabulous event is hosted by Candace Book Blog, Natalia @ Dazzling Reads, The Page Turners, Mary @ The Book Swarm and Bewitched Bookworms.

Here are the questions and my answers for the first week:

1. The story starts out with Echo’s thoughts on how she wants to answer her therapist’s questions (snarky and caustically truthful) which are quickly juxtaposed to how she does (milque-toasty and banal).  Who do you think she hides the truth for more, her parents or herself?

Echo is hiding the truth for her true feelings from everyone, including herself at times. She is definitely not 'fine' and yet she isn't ready to admit it to anyone mainly because there's no one around that she can really trust. Her father betrayed her, her stepmother ruined her family and her brother is gone... She feels alone and  no matter how much she wants to remember the 'freak accident' she's just not ready for it.

2. We see Mrs. Collins, the school therapist, interact with both Echo and Noah in the first few chapters.  From those interactions, what do you think of her?  Is she a prototypical caricature of state care?  Or do you think she’s there to make an honest difference in the lives of those she’s there to help?

Mrs. Collins was my favorite adult character in the book mainly because she was the only one that showed any kind of interest. She was very interested in both Echo and Noah and her methods were very new and unknown to them because no one has showed that much interest in actually helping them. I really believe she cared for them and she wanted to make a difference in their lives.

3. Noah has two friends, Beth and Isaiah, who have his back no matter what–through thick and thin–and he has theirs. Consequently, his life is a little easier because he has two people who know about his situation. Echo only has one close friend, and Lila will barely speak to her in school. Do you think Echo would have had an easier time coping and moving on if she had friends like Noah does?

No, I don't think the number of friends is the problem here. Echo was sharing everything with Lila but wasn't ready to deal with what happened to her. Noah was moving on. He was hurting for his loss but he had a good reason to move on and to continue to fight. Sharing with friends isn't the answer. Having something to fight for is.  Echo on the other hand lost her brother, lost her mother, her father was there but the only thing he cared about was her academic career and her stepmother, and Ashley was interested only in herself... No matter how many friends she had, I don't think they would have been able to help her because none of them knew what she was going through.

4 . Echo fixates on a colorful ribbon that sits on the school counselor’s desk during their one-on-one sessions. Do you think this is a case of “Oh, look at the pretty ribbon. Let me zone out while staring at it” , or could it have a deeper significance!

Oh well, seeing as how I already know the meaning of the ribbon I feel like cheating but even when I first read the book, I felt like the ribbon was somehow significant. I believe she was going to make some kind of a connection with it and she was going to remember something... The ribbon was definitely something important!

5. Noah and the jacket… Already when Noah and Echo meet for the first time, Noah got angry when Echo forgot her Jacket (pg 34). Then on Echo’s Birthday party Noah gave Echo his jacket when he saw that she forgot hers (pg 54). There is a significance behind his anger when Echo has no coat and it tells already so much about Noah!

a) Why do you think is Noah so focused on Echo and her Jacket and what does that tell you about Noah’s character?

Something in Echo made Noah stop and really look at her. After the little incident when he saw the scars, something happened and he couldn't stop thinking about her... He really cared, for some unknown reason. And that told me that he wasn't such a bad guy after all. And he is very protective, that's just who he is.

b) Show us your favorite jacket! Either with you having it on or alone!

It's something like this one:

6. Echo wears gloves all the time to hide her scars. Not only for her sake, but obviously also for the others. When Noah sees Echo’s scars for the first time he’s shocked.
a) Do you think this was the moment he began to see Echo in a different light?

I'm not really sure. That definitely helped but there was something in her that made him look twice. She caught his interest long before he saw the scars but they definitely changed the last remaining thought that she was your normal uptight good girl that things she is better that everyone.

b) Show us your favorite pair of gloves!

I don't usually wear gloves but when I do:
But I also really like these:

  1. Thank you so much for stopping by my blog. You have some very thoughtful answers. I like reading everyone's thoughts and comparing those who have finished the books against readers like me who are reading week to week!

    1. Oh well, I got an early copy form NetGalley, but I don't think I would have been able to read it week by week. I loved it so much that I read it in a day!

  2. I think that he saw her in a different light when he saw her scars, like there's something more there. And he was attracted to her before but I think he just dismissed it immediately cause she was some snotty rich girl. Or so he thought. Suddenly he realized that maybe she wasn't so perfect... And once he started paying attention he suddenly realized that there was MUCH more to her. Anyway, that's what I was thinking...

    1. Well yeah that's what I meant. The scars ultimately changed his opinion but I think there was a strong connection even before that. Anyway, maybe I just didn't explain myself like I wanted... Thanks for visiting!
